Description

Chartbook Newsletter Collection

Overview

The Chartbook Newsletter Collection is a digital archive of 27 newsletters authored by economist Adam Tooze, published between 15 November 2020 and 31 July 2021. Each newsletter is a web‑page document (HTML) that aggregates charts, data visualisations, and commentary on contemporary economic and geopolitical developments. The collection is stored in the PINAX system, is available in English, and is protected by an “All rights reserved” copyright notice.

Background

Adam Tooze, a well‑known author and economist, created the series to provide timely analysis of global economic trends, financial markets, and policy decisions. The collection was formally established on 15 November 2020 by Tooze and is hosted by the test‑tooze institution. The newsletters draw on a wide range of sources, including reports from the Federal Reserve, the Office of Financial Research, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Commission, as well as academic papers and policy briefs.

Contents

The newsletters cover a broad spectrum of subjects:
  • Financial Markets – March 2020 Treasury turmoil, U.S. Treasury market dynamics, Bitcoin price surges, and the SLR exemption.
  • Economic Policy & Fiscal Affairs – Euro‑area inflation concerns, net‑zero policy, and the U.S. “American Families Plan.”
  • Geopolitics – Brexit, China’s economic growth and state capitalism, Russia, Sudan, Sahel, and the Caribbean.
  • Historical Analysis – World War II economics, Weimar hyperinflation, and the Battle of Stalingrad.
  • Regional Focus – China, Italy (Mario Draghi), Nigeria, Afghanistan, and the broader Eurasian context.

Each newsletter is linked to a corresponding HTML file (e.g., `18878070.chartbook-1.html` for Newsletter 1). The collection also includes references to key figures such as Lorie Logan (New York Fed), Steve Mnuchin (former Treasury Secretary), and Xi Jinping (Chinese leader).

Scope

The archive spans the period 2020–2021, concentrating on global economics, financial markets, and geopolitics. It includes data‑rich visualisations and commentary on events from the U.S., China, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The collection does not contain primary source documents (e.g., official policy texts) but provides curated analysis and links to external reports. It is intended for researchers, students, and policy analysts seeking a concise, chart‑driven overview of recent economic developments.
