It has been wonderful to see the readership growing. It is particularly great to see the intensity with which folks engage with the newsletters. </p><p>I am even more excited about the future plans. The list of topics keeps growing. </p><p>Chartbook Newsletter #28 at the weekend will take a deep dive into the World Bank’s first, gushing, report on China in 1983. The least you can say for them is that the World Bank saw the China boom coming. </p><p>The Newsletter pairs with the <a to be an eclectic but fascinating mixture. </p><p>Writing for the newsletter is the most free form work I have done so far. It really is liberating. I’m committed to the format, but it is also seriously time-consuming. 40 newsletters a year, at c. 3000 words each is 120,000 words. Along with books I’m writing - my climate political economy manuscript is due February 2023 - and regular journalism, I have to take that volume of work seriously.</p><p>To see where <em>Chartbook</em> should fit in my portfolio of other activities, as of this week, I am transitioning to a paid subscriber model.</p><p>Don’t panic. It has been wonderful to see the readership growing. It is particularly great to see the intensity with which folks engage with the newsletters. </p><p>I am even more excited about the future plans. The list of topics keeps growing. </p><p>Chartbook Newsletter #28 at the weekend will take a deep dive into the World Bank’s first, gushing, report on China in 1983. The least you can say for them is that the World Bank saw the China boom coming. </p><p>The Newsletter pairs with the <a to be an eclectic but fascinating mixture. </p><p>Writing for the newsletter is the most free form work I have done so far. It really is liberating. I’m committed to the format, but it is also seriously time-consuming. 40 newsletters a year, at c. 3000 words each is 120,000 words. Along with books I’m writing - my climate political economy manuscript is due February 2023 - and regular journalism, I have to take that volume of work seriously.</p><p>To see where <em>Chartbook</em> should fit in my portfolio of other activities, as of this week, I am transitioning to a paid subscriber model.</p><p>Don’t panic. If you like the newsletter but can’t afford a paid subscription, or read the newsletter in a professional setting in which it is not appropriate to be paying a subscription, e.g. public service, NGO etc, I get it. You don’t have to do anything. href="https://www.ft.com/content/9ce326b2-abdb-467b-bfd1-425a499066c1">Kathrin Hille</a> of the FT points out, rising tension with China is opening the door to a more hawkish security policy on the part of Japan. Apparently he "liked the old saying that the first man to suppose a crab might be edible was either very forward-looking or very hungry. -> Learn from those who have the courage to eat crab".
