Chartbook Newsletters

Overview

A digital collection of newsletters and an audio podcast created on 6 September 2021 by historian Adam Tooze. The collection is hosted by the “test‑tooze” institution and is part of the PINAX digital archive. All items are in English and carry an “All rights reserved” copyright notice. The collection comprises eight distinct pieces, each identified by a Chartbook number or subtitle.

Background

Adam Tooze is a contemporary historian and journalist whose work focuses on economic history and international politics. The Chartbook series was launched in 2021 as a series of analytical newsletters that blend historical context with current events. The collection was assembled in the United States and is intended for scholars, students, and policy‑interested readers.

Contents

  • Chartbook #57: 1914, the Urkatastrophe – analysis of the pre‑World I era, imperialism, and liberalism.
  • Chartbook Audio #5: China Talk – Labor Day Holiday Listening – a podcast with hosts Jordan Schneider and Matt Klein, guest William Kentridge.
  • Chartbook on Shutdown #3: Why does the World Bank care about its bond rating? – discussion of multilateral finance, IMF, and the DSSI.
  • Chartbook #36 After Afghanistan: No Post‑American world – examination of U.S. military spending and Afghanistan.
  • Chartbook #38: German election – coverage of the 2021 German election, featuring Olaf Scholz, Armin Laschet, and Angela Merkel.
  • Chartbook #44: The Cross of Gold – critique of populism and monetary politics, citing William Jennings Bryan.
  • Chartbook #39: Blackstone and baby formula – analysis of corporate influence in China’s state capitalism.
  • Chartbook #41: The interlocking crises that will shape the future of the Biden Presidency – overview of the infrastructure bill, reconciliation bill, and debt ceiling.

Each newsletter cites scholars such as Peter Anderson, Alexander Zevin, and William Appleman Williams, and references institutions like the World Bank, IMF, BlackRock, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Scope

The collection covers historical and contemporary events in the United States, Germany, and China, with themes of imperialism, World War I, U.S.–China tensions, the military‑industrial complex, and global economic governance. It is not exhaustive but offers focused, analytical commentary on selected topics. The materials are available via a placeholder URL and remain under full copyright.

**Summary**
The graph links Adam Tooze’s *Chartbook* collection to its individual newsletters, podcasts, and the major historical, economic, and political topics they discuss. It captures the central themes (World War I, imperialism, US‑China strategic rivalry, the Evergrande crisis, German electoral politics, and the “Shutdown” book) and connects each newsletter to the persons, organisations, concepts, and events it references. This structure enables queries such as “Which newsletters discuss the Evergrande crisis?” (→ @chartbook_39_blackstone_baby, @chartbook_3_shutdown) or “What concepts are linked to the 1914 Urkatastrophe newsletter?” (→ @world_war_i, @imperialism, @age_of_imperialism, @liberalism).
