Description

Drexel Collection

Overview

The Drexel Collection is a public‑domain archival assemblage created on 19 March 1836 by the Drexel institution and digitized through the PINAX platform. It comprises handwritten letters, scanned journal pages, and associated metadata. The material is multilingual (German, English, and other languages) and covers subjects such as homeopathic medicine, medical case studies, archival practices, academic conduct, diplomas, education, faculty, and institutional resolutions.

Background

Originating from Drexel’s early 19th‑century holdings, the collection reflects the institution’s engagement with medical scholarship and higher‑education governance. The primary source is the sixth issue of the Correspondenzblatt der homöopathischen Ärzte (published 19 March 1836) and a handwritten letter dated 1 January 1800 concerning academic conduct and diploma validity. The documents are linked to multiple geographic locations—Allentau (Germany), Ohio, Surinam, Leoben (Austria), Northampton (USA), and others—indicating the international reach of the homeopathic community and the institution’s administrative concerns.

Contents

  • Journal Issue (1836): Four scanned TIFF images (a092001208.tif) reproduce the full layout of the Correspondenzblatt issue, containing 17 case reports (Nos. 64–80), editorial commentary on archival organization, and a pledge statement. Remedies such as Spigelia, X0, and Nux are frequently cited.
  • Letter on Academic Conduct (1800): A handwritten English letter addressed to the faculty of St. College, critiquing faculty misconduct, questioning diploma authenticity, and calling for regulatory reform.
  • Metadata & Place Records: Structured JSON entities identify associated places (Allentau, Ohio, Surinam, Germany, St. College, Nieder, Dornburg, Leoben, Schipbach, Northampton) and document relationships, linking the collection to its geographic and institutional context.

Scope

The collection is limited to the two primary documents and their digital reproductions. It covers the period 1800–1836, German and English language materials, and focuses on homeopathic practice, medical case documentation, and early academic integrity debates. The collection does not include additional journal issues, advertisements, or subsequent correspondence. It is valuable for scholars of medical history, homeopathy, archival science, and the evolution of academic standards.
