Description

Female Medical College Session 1863‑1864

Overview

This archival item is a set of memoranda documenting the 1863‑1864 academic session of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. It is a single‑page text record, originally printed in English, accompanied by two digitized images (JPEG and TIFF) of the memorandum. The material was created between 14 October 1863 and 16 March 1864 and is held in the Drexel‑Prod repository, sourced from the PINAX database.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania was one of the earliest institutions dedicated to women’s medical education in the United States. The 1863‑1864 session followed the college’s established curriculum and faculty roster from the previous year. Key figures include Dr. Sample, Dr. Hance, T. Morris Prentice Esq. (President), Dr. Preston, Rev. Mr. Adams (prayer), and E.U. Cleveland (Secretary). The memorandum records the first lecture, the annual commencement, and related faculty activities during this period.

Contents

The memorandum lists the session’s start date (14 Oct 1863) and conclusion (16 Mar 1864). It notes that the first lecture, delivered by Dr. Sample on 12 Oct 1863, substituted for Dr. Hance’s introductory address. The annual commencement, held at 12 p.m. on 16 Mar 1864 in the parlor of the Woman’s Hospital, is described, including the opening prayer by Rev. Mr. Adams, the conferral of degrees by President Prentice, and the valedictory address by Dr. Preston. The document also mentions Dr. Lucy’s private illness and her subsequent recoveries. The accompanying JPEG and TIFF files provide a high‑resolution image of the memorandum, with OCR text confirming the details above.

Scope

The item covers a single academic session of a women’s medical college in Pennsylvania, focusing on faculty lectures and the commencement ceremony. It includes dates, personnel, and institutional practices relevant to 19th‑century medical education for women. The material is limited to the 1863‑1864 session and does not extend beyond the described events.
