Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes – March 10, 1861

Overview

This archival item is a set of faculty meeting minutes dated March 10, 1861, produced by the college’s administrative office (institution: drexel‑production). The material is available in text form and as two scanned images (JPEG and TIFF) that capture the original handwritten minutes. The document is written in English and contains no copyright restrictions.

Background

The minutes record a special faculty meeting held at the college (location unspecified). The meeting was convened to discuss committee reports, amend by‑laws, set the commencement date, and vote on candidates for graduation. Key faculty members present were Reynell Boates, Amen Preston, C.H.J. Scarlett, Dr. Fussell, Dr. Temple, and Dr. Cleveland. The event is part of the college’s ongoing governance and academic oversight during the early 1860s.

Contents

The minutes include:
  • Committee reports from the Committee of Revision and the Committee on Announcement.
  • Amendments to the college by‑laws (Articles 2nd and 4th) defining the duties of the Dean and Secretary, including record‑keeping, correspondence, and financial limits.
  • Commencement details: the ceremony was scheduled for March 14, 1861, at 4 p.m. at the college.
  • Voting on graduation candidates: Miss W. J. McChesney (66‑4), Miss J. M. McCray (60‑10), and Miss S.A. Cook (55‑15). The Dean was authorized to recommend these candidates to the college’s Corporators for diploma issuance.
  • Essay approval: an essay read by Dr. Preston was approved and slated for publication by the Corporators.

The accompanying images (a092001157.jpg/TIF and a092001158.jpg/TIF) provide visual confirmation of the handwritten text and signatures.

Scope

The material covers a single faculty meeting on March 10, 1861, at an unspecified college location. It addresses administrative governance, by‑law amendments, commencement scheduling, and graduation candidate selection. The content is limited to the minutes and related committee reports; it does not include broader institutional records or external correspondence.
