Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1863

Overview

These are the written minutes of faculty meetings held at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania during its eleventh annual session (October 15, 1862 – March 14, 1863). The record is a single text document (English) produced in 1863, preserved in the PINAX archive and available as a scanned image (JPEG/TIFF). It documents four specific meetings: May 30, Oct 3, Oct 28, and Oct 31, 1863.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania was an early institution dedicated to training women in medicine, located in Philadelphia. The minutes were drafted by the college secretary, E. H. Cleveland, and reflect the administrative practices of a 19th‑century professional school. The document is part of a larger collection of institutional records held by Drexel Production and is catalogued under the PINAX system.

Contents

The minutes record attendance, resolutions, and decisions made by the faculty. Key subjects include:
  • Student financial matters: Ticket payments for Miss Cook and Miss Platt, and scholarship arrangements for Miss May.
  • Academic scheduling: Approval of lecture schedules, assignment of the introductory lecture to Prof. Fussell (Nov 1, 1863), and appointment of Dr. Preston as salutatorian.
  • Administrative actions: Authorization of a commencement advertisement, adoption of previous minutes, and discussion of an introductory lecture omission.
  • Personnel: Presence of professors Fussell, Sampf, Preston, Scarlett, Yates, Furnell, Lanlatt, and secretary Cleveland.

The document also notes the closure of the eleventh annual session on March 14, 1863, and references the commencement held on Saturday, October 4, 1863.

Scope

The minutes cover only the faculty meetings of the eleventh annual session, specifically those held in 1863. They provide insight into the college’s governance, curriculum planning, and student support policies for that period. The record does not include minutes from other sessions, external correspondence, or detailed financial ledgers.
