Description

Faculty Meetings 1859

Overview

This digital item is a collection of scanned minutes and related documents from faculty meetings held in 1859. The material consists of five high‑resolution JPEG images (and corresponding TIFF files) that capture the full text of the minutes for meetings on February 10, February 14, February 17, August, and October 7, 1859. The documents are typed in English, dated, and signed by the deans of the institution. They are catalogued under the PINAX system and are available in the “drexel‑production” repository.

Background

The minutes were produced by the deans E. Furrell and E. Furness of a medical faculty (likely the Medical College of Pennsylvania, now part of Drexel University). They record routine administrative matters such as preliminary examinations of candidates, thesis reviews, lecture appointments, and notices of examinations. The meetings reflect the academic governance structure of a mid‑19th‑century medical school, with faculty members, professors, and students (mostly women) participating in the review process.

Contents

The scanned pages contain:
  • Meeting dates and attendees (e.g., Preston, Birdsell, Cleveland, Temple, and the deans).
  • Decisions on preliminary examinations (February 10) and the receipt of applications from several female students (February 14).
  • Thesis assessments by professors Rockey, Temple, Birdsell, Cleveland, Preston, and Furness (February 17).
  • Lecture arrangements: the appointment of Dr. Preston to deliver the general introductory lecture after Dr. Temple declined (August).
  • Reports and motions: a report of Dr. Preston’s lecture (October 7), a motion to set the lecture time at 3:30 p.m., and a note to the janitor about maintaining premises.
  • Supporting documents such as applications for examination, notices of examination, and a card ordering lectures.

Scope

The collection covers the year 1859, focusing on the internal governance of a medical faculty. It includes all faculty meetings held in February, August, and October, but does not contain any external correspondence or student records beyond the applications cited. The material is relevant to researchers of medical education history, faculty governance, and the role of women in 19th‑century medical training. Rights status is unknown; access is provided through the PINAX platform.
