Commencement at the College, 1863

Overview

This archival item is a photographic record (JPEG and TIFF) of the Annual Commencement ceremony held by the College at the Woman’s Hospital on Saturday, March 14, 1863. The image documents the event’s proceedings, including the introductory lecture, faculty roster, and the conferral of Doctor of Medicine degrees to several women. The material is catalogued under the identifier 01K9ZNSMW3S5S4DN7SAFSAH7H7 and is available through the PINAX system.

Background

The College, located in Philadelphia, was a pioneering institution for women’s medical education in the mid‑19th century. The ceremony took place in the Webb lecture rooms, the larger of the College’s lecture spaces. Dr. Teed delivered the opening lecture, while Rev. E.E. Adams opened the services with prayer. The President of the College conferred the degrees, and Prof. Emelius H. Cleveland delivered the valedictory address. The event is significant for its recognition of women in medicine during a period when such achievements were rare.

Contents

The image shows the assembled faculty and attendees in the lecture rooms. The faculty list includes:
  • Edgivio Finsell, M.D., Professor of Principles & Practice
  • Agna Preston, M.D., Professor of Physiology
  • M. Gramphe, M.D., Professor of Chemistry & Forensics
  • Emelius H. Cleveland, M.D., Professor of Institutes
  • Raynwell Coalis, M.D., Professor of Surgery
  • Frank G. Ross, M.D., Professor of Materia Medica
  • Mary S. Scarlett, M.D., Professor of Anatomy & Histology and Demonstrator of Anatomy

Degrees were conferred upon Morris Brooks Esq. and the following women: Sarah J. Maclean (NY), Irving Mills (NY), M.J. McGray (Coylean, Indiana), and F. Amelia Cook (San Francisco, California). The accompanying OCR text confirms these details and notes the valedictory address by Prof. Cleveland.

Scope

The item covers a single event on March 14, 1863, at the College’s Webb lecture rooms. It focuses on the academic ceremony, faculty participation, and the awarding of Doctor of Medicine degrees to women. The material does not include broader institutional records or subsequent events.
