Description

Student Admissions and Financials 1863

Overview

This archival item is a composite record comprising a 1863 text file (ID 01K9ZNSMFW1852CMFAV16ED6S2) and associated image scans (JPEG and TIFF). It documents faculty meetings held on October 28 and October 31, 1863, at an unspecified college, and includes minutes, decisions on scholarships, lecture scheduling, and admission reviews. The creator is E. W. C. Cleveland, the secretary of the faculty, and the material was produced by the institution “drexel‑production” and preserved in the Pinax repository.

Background

The material was compiled during the American Civil War, a period when many colleges faced financial strain and enrollment challenges. Cleveland’s notes reflect routine administrative governance: reviewing student applications, allocating limited scholarship funds, and approving lecture schedules. The faculty comprised Prof. Furnell, Preston, Lanlatt, and Cleveland, with the Dean chairing the October 28 meeting. The documents illustrate the college’s internal decision‑making processes and the role of the secretary in recording proceedings.

Contents

  • Faculty Meeting Minutes (Oct 28, 1863): Discussion of Miss Platts’ scholarship ticket request, conditional payment arrangement, and recognition of Miss May’s scholarship eligibility. The Dean presented Miss Platts’ case; the faculty agreed to provide half the ticket cost with a note for the remainder.
  • Admission Review (Oct 28, 1863): Examination of Miss Duane’s application, allegations of fraud and false statements, and the decision to question her admission as a second‑course student.
  • Lecture Schedule (Oct 31, 1863): Approval of a new lecture schedule by the faculty.
  • Image Scans: High‑resolution JPEG and TIFF copies of the original minutes, with OCR text confirming dates, participants, and key decisions.
  • Metadata: Subject headings include student admissions, financial aid, faculty meetings, scholarships, and education.

Scope

The collection covers administrative activities related to student admissions and financial matters for the year 1863 at a single, unnamed college. It includes internal faculty deliberations, scholarship allocations, and lecture scheduling, but does not extend to other years, other institutions, or broader educational policy documents. The item is useful for researchers studying 19th‑century college governance, scholarship practices, and admission procedures during the Civil War era.

of Women & Children and materia medica & therapeutics—while it is admitted that Miss Duane has attended but one course on any of these subjects with the exception of chemistry & materia medica at the New York Coll. of Pharmacy & therefore not including therapeutics & of these exceptions even we have had no evidence presented. Ist. Because there was no fault on the part of the officers of the faculty—promising her admission as a second course student for that she was founded on the statement of her application—through her attorney that she held a full course of tickets from the New York Med. Coll.—which statement must (at the proper time & in the regular way for deciding on credentials & special qualifications for examination) be ascertained to be both untrue in terms & false in spirit. 2nd. Because of the haste with which the question was pressed, pending inquiries as to what facts were guilty of the attempt at fraud & in which she might be proven to be a participis Criminis & inasmuch as we truly understand the fraud by whomsoever perpetrated. 3rd.
