Description

Faculty Meetings Minutes, 1851‑1857

Overview

This archival item is a text‑based collection of faculty meeting minutes produced by the Dean, David I. Johnson M.D., of an educational institution in Philadelphia. The minutes were recorded between 1851 and 1857 and are preserved as scanned images (JPEG and TIFF) and machine‑readable OCR text. The collection is catalogued under the PINAX system and is available in English (en‑US). It is held by the repository “drexel‑production” and includes both primary documents and associated metadata.

Background

The minutes document the administrative deliberations of the faculty during a formative period for the institution. The Dean, a medical doctor, served as the primary recorder and chair of the meetings. The governing body, referred to as the “Corporators,” was consulted on faculty appointments and institutional regulations. The collection reflects the governance practices of mid‑19th‑century American higher‑education institutions, including the management of faculty accounts, the issuance of professor tickets, and the appointment of departmental chairs.

Contents

Key entries include:
  • August 21 1857: Recommendation of Dr. M W Dickerson for Chair of Chemistry; authorization for the Dean to sell and issue professor tickets.
  • September 11 1852: Adoption of Regulation 7 (“No Professor shall sell his ticket unless the applicant exhibits the matriculating ticket”); appointment of Dr. Livezey to replace Dr. Moseley; approval of a wife‑beneficiary application for Dr. J. Emerson Kent.
  • September 17 1852: Balance report showing $2.83 in favor of the Dean; acceptance of Miss Caroline C. Thayer (Lancaster, Erie Co., N.Y.) as a beneficiary.

The collection also contains ancillary documents such as letters, regulation notices, and balance reports, all linked to the corresponding meeting entries. The scanned images provide the original handwritten or printed minutes, while the OCR text offers searchable content.

Scope

The collection covers faculty meetings held from 1851 to 1857, focusing on administrative decisions, regulatory changes, faculty appointments, and financial matters. Geographic coverage is limited to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with occasional references to Lancaster, Erie Co., N.Y. The material excludes broader institutional records (e.g., student enrollment, curriculum) and focuses strictly on faculty governance.
