Description

Faculty Meetings of 1864

Overview

This archival item is a composite record of faculty meetings held in 1864 at Lehigh College (now Lehigh University) in Philadelphia. It consists of a text file titled Faculty Meetings of 1864 and eight scanned images (four JPEGs and four TIFFs) that reproduce the minutes of two meetings, a letter from Dr. Fussell, and related correspondence. The material is in English, dated 1864, and is catalogued under the institution “drexel-production” with no specified rights restrictions.

Background

The meetings were convened to address academic administration matters such as thesis evaluation, graduation requirements, faculty resignations, and the appointment of committees. The first meeting took place on February 8, 1864, at the college; the second on April 8, 1864, at the house of Dr. Preston, 215 Broadwater Street. Participants included faculty members Dr. Turrell, Dr. Boates, Dr. Semple, Dr. Kear, Dr. Scarlett, Dr. Preston, Dr. Rose, Dr. Farnell, Dr. Corbett, Dr. Percy, Dr. Kerr, Dr. Fussell, Rev. Leavitt, and secretaries E. H. Cleveland and E. V. Cleveland.

Contents

  • Minutes of the February 8 meeting: Reports on student theses (Miss Rutanum, Miss Lomphuis, Miss Tyng, Miss Pettingill), discussion of deficiencies, and a motion to adjourn.
  • Minutes of the April 8 meeting: Resolutions to withhold votes from incompetent applicants, appointment of a committee (Dr. Rose, Dr. Cleveland, Dr. Farnell, Dr. Corbett, Dr. Preston) to review Dr. Farnell’s resignation, and authorization for Miss Putnam to submit an English thesis.
  • Letter from Dr. Fussell (dated April 7, 1864) addressing the faculty, summarizing resolutions, and expressing concerns about the college’s welfare.
  • Photographic reproductions of the original minutes and letter, captured in both JPEG and TIFF formats for preservation and scholarly use.

Scope

The collection covers the year 1864, focusing on faculty governance at Lehigh College in Philadelphia. It documents academic policy deliberations, student assessment, and faculty personnel matters within the medical education program. The material excludes broader institutional histories or external correspondence beyond the immediate faculty circle.

of a joint examination: the Professors confer together with reference to her several examinations & give her the advantage of a second vote. This proposition having accepted by the Faculty resulted in increasing her white vote by one member only & consequently in her original exclusion from the privilege of graduation. The Dean reported that a second letter had been received from Dr. Percy in reply & that addressed to the Dean of the New York Med. Coll. in which every single inquiry save that relating to Miss Putnam's New York dissection was evaded as in his first communication. He reports that she has dissected in the College & in his

4th. Resolved that we are anew impressed with the necessity of withholding our votes from incompetent applicants for the honors of this College & we pledge ourselves in our heart & on another to be ever faithful & firm in this particular. Apr 8, 1864 Meeting of the Faculty at the house of Dr. Preston, 215 Broadwater St., present Mrs. Preston, Rev. Leavitt & Cleveland. Dr. Preston was called to the Chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read & approved. Dr. Kerr from the Committee to wait upon Dr. Fussell reported a visit made & resolutions delivered to Mrs. Fussell. The Doctor not being at home. The report was accepted & the Committee discharged. The following communication was read from Dr. Fussell. Philadelphia, Apr 7th, 1864 To the Faculty of Lehigh and Cole of Pa. My dear Friends—I have received & carefully perused your resolutions of the 3d ult. I thank you for your words of kindness & sympathy. I am sure I feel toward you personally as kindly as you do to me. I am sure I never felt more well for the welfare of the College & its Cause—but I can see no

rescuing or changing my course of view or conduct. I cannot permit myself to be a party any more to the grade-striving or incapacitate. If any means can be devised to secure herself from such results as have been reached this session, I shall only be too happy & labor on in St. College & for the Cause as heretofore—but a mere resolve & pledge will not assure me: thus we have had before—several probably did so & might have a stronger desire to do right than previous to the voting this Spring & yet—in my view & in yours too, now, if I mistake not—the faculty immutably proceed to do wrong—what will prevent such things from recurring? Not resolutions—not pledges. One may as many others have done—"resolve & unresolve—time is the same"—If a reconstruction of regulations or any other mode of effecting the object can be devised I shall be glad, if not—I cannot be induced to remain for I have full made up my mind never to sign an invalid diploma
