Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes and Related Documents, 1850‑1864

Overview

This collection comprises handwritten and bound minutes, resolutions, by‑laws, and ancillary documents produced by the faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (later the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania). The materials cover the period from the college’s founding on 25 June 1850 through 31 October 1864 and are written in English. They are held in Drexel University’s Legacy Center and were digitized for the PINAX archive.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania was the first institution worldwide devoted to the medical education of women. Its faculty included physicians, professors, and clerical staff such as Dr. Preston, Dr. Fussell, Dr. Kerr, Dr. Boston, Dr. Rose, Dr. Corbett, Miss Putnam, Mrs. Preston, Rev. Leavitt, Prof. Russell Temple, Prof. Furnell, Dr. Coates, and Miss Lillie. Secretary Edwin B. Cleveland recorded the proceedings. The college was located at 229 Arch Street, Philadelphia, and later renamed the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Contents

  • Minutes of faculty meetings held in Philadelphia and New York (including sessions on 4, 8, 16, 20, 24 April 1864 and 8, 31 October 1864).
  • Resolutions on withholding votes, student admissions, and fee adjustments.
  • Adoption of by‑law articles 7‑9, 11, 14, 22 and related committee reports (e.g., Committee to wait upon Dr. Farnell, Committee on annual arrangements).
  • A draft announcement for the upcoming session and a resignation letter from Dr. Fussell.
  • Ancillary documents such as a resolution on withholding votes and a letter of resignation.

Scope

The collection documents the administrative and academic governance of the college from 1850 to 1864, focusing on faculty deliberations, by‑law development, committee appointments, and student admissions. It includes material from Philadelphia, New York, Girard College, and the Pennsylvania Medical University. The archive does not contain student files or personal correspondence beyond the minutes and related documents. The collection is a primary source for scholars of women’s medical education, early medical institutions, and the professionalization of women in the 19th century.

**3. Cross‑subdirectory patterns & insights**

- **Creator‑to‑activity nexus**: The same individuals who are listed as creators of the PINAX collection (e.g., @e_b_cleveland, @dr_fussell, @miss_lillie) also appear as secretaries, committee members, meeting chairs, or document authors in the 1864 faculty‑meeting records. This demonstrates a tightly‑knit administrative core driving both the archival compilation and the day‑to‑day governance of the college.

- **Place centrality**: @marshall_street serves repeatedly as the venue for meetings in both the *Faculty_Meetings_1864* and *Regulations_and_By‑laws* subdirectories, linking the physical setting of the college’s governance across the entire collection.

- **By‑law evolution**: Concepts @article_7, @article_8, @article_9 (adopted on April 20 1864) are later encapsulated in the document @bylaws_articles_7_8_9, which is also cited in the *Regulations_and_By‑laws* subdirectory. This shows a clear trajectory from individual article adoption to formal by‑law codification.

- **Event duplication resolution**: The same meetings are recorded under two different identifiers (e.g., @meeting_apr_4_1864:event vs. @faculty_meeting_april_4_1864:event). By asserting a *same as* relationship we unify the record set, enabling a single, coherent timeline for the 1864 faculty activities.

- **Collection‑level abstraction**: The newly created entity @faculty_meetings_1864:collection aggregates all 1864 meetings, links them to the PINAX metadata, and provides a single point of reference for queries about the college’s governance during that year.

These synthesized connections reveal how the administrative personnel, physical venues, and regulatory documents interlock across the three subdirectories, offering a holistic view of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania’s faculty governance between 1850 and 1864.

# Reorganization Summary

The files were organized into three distinct groups based on their content and context. The primary grouping focuses on faculty meetings held in 1864, capturing detailed discussions and resolutions. A second group contains the metadata file describing the minute book of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. The third group includes files related to the discussion and adoption of regulations and by-laws. This strategy ensures logical coherence and minimizes overlap, while accurately representing the content of each file.

## Groups Created

- **Faculty_Meetings_1864**: Files containing detailed records of faculty meetings held in 1864, including resolutions, committee reports, and discussions on college regulations.
- **Minute_Book_Metadata**: The XML file containing metadata and descriptions of the minute book of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, including abstracts, identifiers, and related information.
- **Regulations_and_By-laws**: Files related to the discussion and adoption of regulations and by-laws for the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania.
