Description

Faculty Meetings, 1862

Overview

This archival item comprises scanned images of the minutes from faculty meetings held in 1862 at a medical college affiliated with Wagner’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The collection includes three primary meeting records (February 6, February 13, and September 13, 1862) captured as JPEG and TIFF files, accompanied by a metadata file (JSON) that identifies the source, creators, and institutional context. The minutes were produced by the faculty of the college, which was part of the final‑Drexel‑University system.

Background

The meetings were convened to address organizational matters, faculty appointments, student applications, and the management of hospital apparatus. Key faculty members present included A. Preston, E. H. Cleveland, Dr. Birdsell, Dr. Fussell, Dr. Temple, Dr. Kerr, Dr. Booth, Dr. Locatis, Dr. Russell, and Dr. Simple. The college operated under the oversight of a Board of Corporators and an Executive Committee, and the minutes reflect interactions between faculty and these governing bodies. The institution’s location in Philadelphia and its association with Wagner’s Hospital are noted, with occasional references to Peoria, Illinois, where some student applicants originated.

Contents

  • February 6, 1862: Resignation of Dr. Birdsell, appointment of A. Preston to investigate Dr. Thomas’s potential lecture on Anatomy, and presentation of two inaugural theses (Mrs. Redmond on capillary circulation; Mrs. Parter on dysmenorrhoea). Discussion of hospital apparatus and medicines.
  • February 13, 1862: Report on Dr. Thomas’s tentative willingness to lecture; withdrawal of Mrs. Redmond’s graduation application; adjournment to a meeting at 315 Marshall St.
  • September 13, 1862: Meeting at the New College Rooms in Wagner’s Hospital; appointments of committees to inventory museum articles; recommendation of Mary T. Fassell for Chair of Anatomy & Physiology; discussion of winter lectures by Dr. Kern on material medicine and practice of medicine.
The images include handwritten notes, motions, and committee assignments.

Scope

The collection covers the year 1862, focusing on faculty governance within a Philadelphia‑based medical college. It includes minutes of three specific meetings, relevant administrative decisions, and student‑related matters. The material does not extend beyond 1862 or include broader institutional records outside the faculty meetings.

An motion it was agreed that such apparatus & medicines (cannons stock of the faculty) as might be of service to the Hospital be placed in the hands of the Managers of that Institution at of their discretion until needed by the College. The Faculty met at Mr. Barton's 35 S Decand St on Feb 6th, 1862 Present: Birdsell, Semple, Finsell, Revr. Cleveland & Boston. The organization of the Faculty for the ensuing year was discussed. Dr. Birdsell informed the meeting that his other duties would make it necessary for him to resign his post of lecturer in the College. Several propositions were made for filling the vacant chairs, but finally A. Preston was appointed to see Dr. Thomas & ascertain whether or not he would be willing to lecture upon Anatomy at our Institution the next session, and the whole subject was left for further action hereafter. Two essays for inaugural theses were presented, one from Mrs. Redmond on the Capillary Circulation. The other from Mrs. Parter on Dysmenorrhoea. These essays were examined in the Faculty meeting & an motion it was voted that both

On Motion it was agreed to defence with the reading of minutes of former meeting & in the absence of the Secretary Mrs. Cleveland was invited to act as Corr. Pro-Tem. Dr. Locatis informed of a meeting of the Board of Corpora- tions which was held on the 1st inst. & what action was taken with reference to the recommendation of the faculty that Messrs. E. Leech & A.D. be appointed to the Professorship of Anatomy & Histology in the College. Dr. Russell explained that such meeting had been held & no action taken, but that the object of this meeting was to consider another proposition viz. that Dr. Kern be invited to lecture for the coming winter upon the two branches Material Medicine & the Practice of Medicine, leaving to Drs. Russell & Cleveland their former professor- ships. After some consideration Dr. Locatis moved that the suggested arrangement be recommended.

to the Corporators. The motion was not carried.
