Chartbook Newsletter Collection

Overview

The Chartbook Newsletter Collection is a digital compilation of weekly newsletters authored by historian Adam Tooze and published by the Chartbook Series. Created on 15 November 2020, the collection is available in English and is hosted on the PINAX platform. It comprises 29 newsletters (Chartbook #1–#29) plus a supplemental Treasury‑Market file, covering the period from November 2020 through July 2021. Each newsletter is a brief, data‑rich essay that pairs charts with concise commentary on contemporary economic and political developments.

Background

Adam Tooze, a professor of history at Oxford University, is known for his work on economic history and the political economy of the global system. The Chartbook Series, operated by the Chartbook organization, publishes regular newsletters that distill complex economic data into accessible visual formats. The collection was assembled for archival purposes by the PINAX project, which aggregates digital scholarly outputs. All materials are under “All rights reserved” copyright.

Contents

The newsletters cover a wide array of topics, including:
  • The 2020 US Treasury market crisis and the “dash for cash” (Chartbook #1).
  • Brexit’s fiscal implications (Chartbook #3).
  • Bond vigilantes and the 1994 bond‑market massacre (Chartbook #4 and #14).
  • China’s state‑capitalism model (Chartbook #9 and #13).
  • Nigeria’s economic crossroads (Chartbook #10).
  • Euro‑area challenges in 2021 (Chartbook #12).
  • Biden’s families plan (Chartbook #19).
  • Caribbean and Central American crises (Chartbook #20).
  • Historical case studies such as Weimar hyperinflation (Chartbook #22) and China’s hyperinflation (Chartbook #26).
  • Afghanistan’s economy on the eve of the U.S. exit (Chartbook #29).
Each newsletter includes a subtitle summarizing its focus, a publication date, and a link to the full HTML file.

Scope

The collection documents global economic and political trends from late 2020 to mid‑2021, with a particular emphasis on financial markets, fiscal policy, and historical context. Geographically, it covers the United States, Europe, Asia, and global developments. The materials are intended for scholars, students, and policy analysts interested in economic history, political economy, and contemporary financial markets. The collection does not include raw data sets beyond those embedded in the charts; it focuses on narrative analysis and visual representation.
