Description

1896 Envelopes and Postcards Collection

Overview

This collection comprises four digitized images of envelopes and a postcard dated 1896. The items were created in the United States and Canada and are written in English. They were assembled by the Alice Austen House Test and are catalogued under the title 1896 Envelopes and Postcards Collection.

Background

The correspondence reflects the social networks of the late nineteenth‑century North American middle class. Recipients include Alice Weston, Alice Aniston, and Rhose Austin, all of whom were addressed through care‑of arrangements to family members or associates. The senders—J. Irving Goddard, Uncle Celestia, and others—were connected to the recipients by friendship, kinship, or business. The collection was likely compiled for archival purposes by the Alice Austen House Test, an institution dedicated to preserving personal papers related to the photographer Alice Austen.

Contents

  • Postcard (August 30 1896) – Signed by “Uncle Celestia,” addressed to May Barnett of Women, News, Co. The text references a trip to Abingdon and comments on the social scene.
  • Envelope (August 30 1896) – From J. Irving Goddard, proprietor of Mountain Rest House, to Miss Alice Weston (care of Mrs. A. Shortt), located in Alvington, Thynston, Ontario.
  • Envelope (September 2 1896) – From an unnamed sender to Miss Alice Aniston (care of W.R. Shortt Esq.), addressed to Aludington, Kingston, Ontario.
  • Envelope (September 30 1896) – From an unnamed sender to Miss Rhose Austin (care of Max W.H. Townsend), addressed to No 77 Park Avenue, New York.

Each item is a scanned photograph of the original postal stationery, preserving the handwritten addresses, stamps, and postmarks.

Scope

The collection covers personal correspondence from 1896, focusing on travel and social relations between the United States and Canada. It includes only four items, all addressed to the same three women, and thus offers a narrow but focused glimpse into the everyday communication practices of the period. The collection does not contain any additional documents, such as letters or diaries, and is limited to the postal artifacts listed above.

Women, News, Co. May. Barnett Papa & I would find out about it. We had the usual service this week & I did the singing as usual. There are a lot more old women here, all ugly. I will be glad to leave & see some good looking people for a change. Well everyone has gone to bed so I must follow as it is not proper for me to be here alone with Mr. Goddard. Hoping to hear soon of your safe arrival at Abingdon & all about the place I am as ever your loving friend. (All miss you) Uncle Celestia
