Description

Violet Ward Correspondence Collection, 1896

Overview

The Violet Ward Correspondence Collection is a set of handwritten letters written in 1896 by Violet Ward to her close friend and relative, Alice Austen. The collection is held by the Alice Austen House Test and is available through the PINAX digital repository. It consists of ten scanned images of the original letters, each preserved in high‑resolution JPEG format. The letters are written in English and are dated from May to September 1896, with two additional letters from August 1894 that were included in the same archival bundle.

Background

Violet Ward (born 1873) was a resident of Cazenovia, New York, and a member of the local Cazenovia Club. She maintained a close correspondence with Alice Austen (1848‑1938), a prominent photographer and philanthropist who lived in the same region. The letters were likely produced during Ward’s travels and daily life in the late 19th‑century rural North East, reflecting the social and familial networks of the period. The collection was digitized by the Alice Austen House Test and catalogued under the title “Violet Ward Correspondence Collection, 1896.”

Contents

The collection contains ten letters, each addressed to Alice Austen. The letters discuss a range of everyday topics:
  • Travel and leisure – references to visits to Cazenovia, Thompkinsville, Lancaster, and New York City; mentions of golf lessons, sailing, and the Cazenovia Club.
  • Family matters – updates on Ward’s father, her mother’s health, and the care of relatives such as Larrie and Daisy.
  • Social interactions – greetings to friends like Wilson and Mr. K, and notes on local events.
  • Personal reflections – expressions of affection, humor, and routine concerns (e.g., “good luck to you,” “write to me do”).

Each letter is accompanied by a scanned image that preserves the original handwriting, ink, and paper texture. The images are labeled with dates and include OCR text extracted from the scans.

Scope

The collection covers the year 1896 (with two 1894 letters) and focuses on the personal correspondence of Violet Ward to Alice Austen. Geographically, it references the towns of Cazenovia, Thompkinsville, Lancaster, Madison, and New York City, all within New York State. Thematically, the letters address travel, family relations, local social life, and everyday domestic concerns. The collection does not include any other documents, such as diaries or photographs, and is limited to the ten letters and their digital reproductions.
