Description

Carrie Ward Correspondence Collection, 1896

Overview

This collection comprises two handwritten letters written by Carrie M. Ward on August 20, 1896, addressed to a recipient named Alice. The letters were produced at the Cazenovia Club in Cazenovia, New York, and are preserved as scanned JPEG images (≈3 MB each) with accompanying OCR text. The collection is part of the “Alice Austen House Test” institutional repository and is available in English.

Background

Carrie M. Ward was a resident of Cazenovia, New York, in the late nineteenth century. The correspondence reflects her personal life and social engagements during that period. The letters were created during a brief sailing outing and a period of personal dispute, illustrating typical domestic concerns of the era. The collection was digitized for archival purposes and is catalogued under the test institution “Alice Austen House Test.”

Contents

  • Letter 1 (1896‑08‑20 1002): Begins with a greeting to “Dear Alice,” and recounts plans to sail at 10:45 am, noting delays in writing. It mentions family members—Papa, Vi, and the Kid—providing updates on their well‑being and responsibilities at home. The letter is signed “C. M. W.” and dated Thursday morning.
  • Letter 2 (1896‑08‑20 1003): Addresses a personal dispute, references Lincklern Hansel and Affy, and conveys a tone of frustration. The letter is also signed “C. M. W.” and dated Thursday morning. Both letters are written in a casual, conversational style typical of personal correspondence of the time.

The scanned images include the original inked text and marginalia, while the OCR output provides a machine‑readable transcription of the content.

Scope

The collection covers two distinct letters dated August 20, 1896, written in English by Carrie M. Ward from Cazenovia, New York. It focuses on personal family updates, sailing plans, and a brief personal dispute. The collection does not include other letters, later correspondence, or documents from other dates or correspondents. It is limited to the two scanned images and their OCR transcriptions, offering a snapshot of Ward’s domestic life and social interactions during that specific day.

CAZENOVIA CLUB, CAZENOVIA, N.Y. My dear Alice - We are going for a sail at 10:45 & it is past 10:30 so I can write but little. I waited to come up here to write & was too corked up for 2 days to do so. Papa seems all right - Vi is in fair shape - but must be no better before returning or there will be squalls. The Kid is in charge at the house & not having too easy a time I fear - I consider it

It is fault not mine, to have obviated it, I would have had to disbelieve her - a kind of chuck up of rudeness. It is quite cold here - charming & cordial - I don't know much else yet - Write me how Lincklern Hansel I am in too much of a hurry to think up what happened before I left it. I have avoided you this a long while - Affy C. M. W. Thursday morning
