Description

Julia Martin Correspondence Collection (1896)

Overview

This is a bound collection of personal letters written by Julia Martin during 1896, addressed to her friend and correspondent Alice Austen. The collection was assembled between 5 February and 6 December 1896 and is preserved in the Alice Austen House Test repository. The letters are written in English and are accompanied by scanned images of the original pages, each with OCR‑extracted text.

Background

Julia Martin, a resident of 1624 Garden St., Santa Barbara, operated a boarding house called “The Palms.” The letters document her daily life, management of the boarding house, and social engagements in Santa Barbara. Martin’s correspondence reflects her interactions with a variety of guests and acquaintances, including the Colby family from Portland, Mrs. Nicoll, and local figures such as Dr. Hall and Herr Lehny of the Santa Barbara Philharmonic. The letters were sent to Alice Austen, who resided in Staten Island, New York, and occasionally to other contacts in San Francisco, California.

Contents

The collection contains eight letters dated 4 February, 4 April, 23 October, and 6 December 1896. Each letter spans multiple pages (up to eight) and is preserved as a separate JPEG image with accompanying OCR text. The letters cover topics such as:
  • The addition of new rooms and a bath to “The Palms” (Dec 6).
  • The arrival and departure of boarders (Colby family, Mrs. Nicoll, Mrs. Adam).
  • Social events, including an ice‑cream table fair, a charades activity, and attendance at the Santa Barbara Philharmonic.
  • Personal reflections on health, finances, and the operation of the boarding house.
  • References to local institutions (St. Paul’s School, the Sanitarium) and to broader social networks.

Scope

The collection is confined to the year 1896 and to the geographic area of Santa Barbara, California, with ancillary references to Staten Island and San Francisco. It focuses on personal correspondence, boarding‑house management, and social life in a 19th‑century Californian coastal town. The material is suitable for researchers interested in domestic history, hospitality, and social networks of the period.
