Description

1896 Fishkill Correspondence Collection

Overview

The 1896 Fishkill Correspondence Collection is a small archival set comprising two handwritten letters, both dated December 30, 1896, written from Fishkill, New York, to a recipient named “Lolla.” The letters were later scanned and preserved as JPEG images. The collection is housed in the Alice Austen House Test institution and is available in English.

Background

The correspondence was produced by an unnamed author residing in Fishkill who was writing to a close acquaintance or relative, Lolla. The letters were created on the same day, reflecting a personal snapshot of family life during the late nineteenth‑century. The collection was assembled by the Alice Austen House Test, an archival repository that curates nineteenth‑century documents related to regional history and personal narratives.

Contents

  • Letter 1002 – Discusses the safe arrival of photographs sent by Lolla to North Plains, the emotional impact of these images on the author’s mother, and the mother’s ongoing health struggles with acute indigestion.
  • Letter 1003 – Continues the discussion of the mother’s health, noting her recovery attempts around Thanksgiving, her persistent digestive issues, and the author’s hopes for her well‑being. The letter also expresses gratitude, best wishes for the New Year, and a general concern for Lolla’s welfare.
Both letters are accompanied by scanned photographic reproductions of the original handwritten pages, each image labeled with the letter number and date.

Scope

The collection covers a single day (December 30, 1896) and focuses on personal family matters—health, gratitude, and seasonal greetings—within the context of Fishkill, New York, and the nearby community of North Plains. It does not include the photographs themselves, only references to them. The material is limited to two documents, offering a concise view of domestic correspondence in the late 1800s.

Fishkill on Hudson Dec. 30, 1896 My dear Lolla, Your photographs arrived safely and good condition in North Plains. One to thank so much for them and to say that they bring back to her very vividly old scenes in which she is so deeply interested, and old days—and now your work has brought back to her scenes which she was familiar with long before you were born. It is very sweet of you dear Lolla to send them. Mother has been very sick; she was taken with an attack of acute indigestion some two months ago—and never

fully recovered from it, at Thanksgiving time she was doing as usual, but had not really regained her strength. Then soon again she was taken in the same way and it has been my hard to bring back her digestive organs to working order. Indeed they are not in order yet. Mother watched dune sterns to deny for a little while in the first, and I hope will soon now be down for her meals—her strength is wonderful—and of course is always a great stand by in bringing her back to health again. We hope you are all well and send you our love and best wishes for a happy New Year.
