Description

Charles Cann Divorce Case Notes Collection (1836)

Overview

This collection comprises scanned images of the original case notes from the New Haven County Superior Court’s divorce proceeding involving Charles Cann and Hamitt Cann, dated 1836. The notes were recorded by the court clerk and include handwritten entries, official stamps, and marginal remarks. The collection is part of the Connecticut State Library’s NHSC BAAI project, which digitizes and describes court records that pertain to Black, African American, and Indigenous individuals.

Background

The New Haven County Superior Court handled civil and criminal matters for the county during the early nineteenth century. Divorce cases were relatively uncommon and often reflected the social and legal norms of the era. The NHSC BAAI initiative, sponsored by the Connecticut State Library, seeks to bring to light court records that illuminate the experiences of marginalized communities in Connecticut’s legal history. The Charles Cann case is a representative example of the types of documents the project aims to preserve and make accessible.

Contents

The collection contains two high‑resolution scans of the same page of the case notes: a JPEG (180 KB) and a TIFF (15 MB). The images capture the handwritten entries “Charles Can.” and “Hamitt Can.”, the court abbreviation “St A Ct Cay 1836”, and the notation “C & P Atty Note granted by.” The scans preserve the original ink, marginalia, and any court stamps. Associated metadata records the case as a divorce proceeding, lists the parties, the court jurisdiction, and the date of the note. No additional docket sheets, affidavits, or related documents are included in this collection.

Scope

The collection is limited to the case notes for a single 1836 divorce proceeding in New Haven County, Connecticut. It does not include the full docket, affidavits, or other ancillary materials. The collection is relevant for scholars of early nineteenth‑century divorce law, African American legal history, and the archival practices of the New Haven County Superior Court.
