@divorce_petition_1799 -> includes grounds -> [@adultery, @desertion]At a Superior Court, Holden at New Haven, within and for the County of New Haven on the last Tuesday of July 1799. Upon the Petition of Hope Marks of said Wallingford, Showing that on the 28th of June 1786 she was married to Levi Marks of S. Wallingford and that about the 20th of June 1799 & at other times during the course of the R. Levi has been guilty of the crime of adultery & praying for a bill of divorce as per petition on file dated June 26th 1799. The facts appearing but the respondent appeared not; whereupon the facts stated in the petition being proved are found to be true. Resolved that R. Hope be and she is hereby divorced from R. Levi and from all obligations & covenants with said Levi by force of the marriage aforesaid. A. Wm Bishop Clerk.
To the Honorable Superior Court to be holder at New Haven within and for the County of New Haven on the last Tuesday of July next— The Petition of Hope Marks of Wallingford in Saw County humbly Sheweth— That on the 28th day of October AD 1786 she was lawfully joined in marriage with Levi Marks of Saw Wallingford at which time her prospects were flattering & she indulged hopefully in hopes of many happy days in that connection—But your Petitioner has to lament that for several years past the said Marks has withdrawn all his affections from your Petitioner & has frequently indulged himself in familiarities & criminal correspondence with other women & for about fifteen months last past has wholly deserted your Petitioner & totally neglected every duty appertaining to a husband—And your Petitioner is constrained further to state to your Honor that the said Marks in the course of the last fifteen months has & especially on or about the 20th day of June last has been guilty of the crime of Adultery—By which conduct the said Levi has violated & broken his covenant of marriage with your Petitioner—Wherefore she prays your Honor to take her unhappy case into your wise consideration & to grant her a Bill of Divorce from the said Levi thereby discharging her from the performance of any further duties to him as a husband & she as in duty bound will ever pray— Wallingford 26th June 1791— Hope Marks
