Description

New Haven County Superior Court Adultery Testimonies Collection

Overview

This is a digital collection of sworn testimonies recorded in the New Haven County Superior Court during the late 18th century. The collection, assembled by George Chardon Nicholson in September 1781, contains three primary documents—Testimony 004 (1701‑08‑07), Testimony 006 (1779‑09‑01), and Testimony 008 (1781‑09‑01)—each presented as both JPEG and TIFF scans. The testimonies were sworn by Nicholson, Doctor Godfrey Enax, and W. M. Jeremiah Johnston, and were recorded by court clerks G. B. Skinner, J. Vorbach, and G. Biskin, respectively.

Background

The documents originate from the New Haven County Superior Court, a key venue for civil and criminal matters in Connecticut. They were produced as part of a broader archival effort by the Connecticut State Library to digitize and index New Haven County Superior Court files, particularly those pertaining to Black, African American, and Indigenous history (the BAAI project). The testimonies were sworn in Albany, New York, reflecting the court’s jurisdiction over cases involving residents of the region.

Contents

  • Testimony 004: Witness George Chardon Nicholson alleges that Captain William Shearman cohabited with Sarah M. Barde (alias Miller) and committed adultery with a Negro wench near Sam L. Bromley’s house.
  • Testimony 006: Doctor Enax reports seeing Lieutenant William Shoarman (a former paymaster) in bed with a married woman.
  • Testimony 008: Jeremiah Johnston recounts Shearman’s repeated visits to houses of “loose women,” including a married woman and an unmarried woman, and Shearman’s boastful claims of sexual exploits.

Each testimony is accompanied by a scanned image of the original court record, preserving the handwritten text and marginalia.

Scope

The collection covers the period 1701‑1781, focusing on adultery cases involving William Shearman and related individuals. It is geographically bound to New Haven, Connecticut, and Albany, New York, and thematically centers on marital misconduct, court testimony, and the intersection of race and law in colonial and early‑American Connecticut. The collection excludes other court matters such as criminal indictments or property disputes, concentrating solely on the documented testimonies of adultery and related accusations.
