Description

New Haven County Superior Court Property Valuation Records – Black, African American, and Indigenous Cases

Overview

This is a digitized collection of property‑valuation documents from the New Haven County Superior Court, created in 1853. The material focuses on divorce proceedings involving Black, African American, and Indigenous individuals, and includes images of case files, valuation lists, and court orders. The collection is housed by the Connecticut State Library and is part of the NHSC BAAI (Black, African American, and Indigenous History) project, which indexes these files under a subject‑field database.

Background

The New Haven County Superior Court produced the original paper records, which were later digitized by the Connecticut State Library as part of its New Haven County court project. The project aims to preserve and make accessible 19th‑century court documents that illuminate the legal experiences of marginalized communities. The collection is linked to the NHSC BAAI Cases Papers Subject index, a database field that assigns controlled subject terms to each case file for research and retrieval.

Contents

  • Case File 009 – Divorce tenant record, photographed in JPEG and TIFF formats. OCR text lists 89.30 USD in personal property (e.g., silver spoons, textiles, furniture).
  • Valuation List 009 – Summary of the same 89.30 USD total.
  • Case File 013 – Divorce tenant record, also in JPEG and TIFF. OCR text contains a court order dated 12 April 1853, awarding the petitioner personal property valued at 9.80 USD and a monetary award of 2,699 USD.
  • Court Order 013 – The same order in image form, showing the monetary award and property valuation.

The collection also includes metadata linking each image to its corresponding case file and valuation list, and the subject index that categorizes the records under “Property valuation,” “Divorce proceedings,” and “Black, African American, and Indigenous history.”

Scope

The collection covers the year 1853, New Haven County, Connecticut, and is limited to property‑valuation records from divorce cases involving Black, African American, and Indigenous parties. It does not include other types of court filings or cases outside this demographic focus. The material is available in both JPEG and TIFF formats, with OCR‑extracted text for searchable content.
