Description

Harrison vs. Lanson Gilbert Execution Papers Collection

Overview

The collection is a set of legal documents from the New Haven County Superior Court, created between 1834‑05‑03 and 1836‑02‑13. It contains a writ of execution issued on 1834‑09‑15 and a payment record dated 1836‑02‑13, both relating to the judgment of Alexander Harrison against Thomas Gilbert Florillium Landon over a parcel of land in New Haven, Connecticut. The items are preserved as scanned JPEG and TIFF images, accompanied by OCR‑extracted text, and are catalogued in the Connecticut State Library’s New Haven County Superior Court (NHSC) database under the Black, African American, and Indigenous (BAAI) project.

Background

The case arose from a land dispute in which Harrison recovered a judgment of $1.00 in damages and $23.40 in costs. The writ of execution authorized the sheriff to seize the debtor’s property and to hold the debtor in the county jail until the judgment was satisfied. The payment record records the full settlement of $25.00, paid by Harrison to Landon through attorney Jonathan Stoddart. The documents illustrate 19th‑century court procedure and property law in New Haven, and they are significant for studies of African American legal history in the region.

Contents

  • Execution Writ (1834‑09‑15) – Text of the writ, including the court’s order to the sheriff, the description of the property, and the amount owed.
  • Payment Record (1836‑02‑13) – Receipt of the $25.00 payment, noting the parties, attorney, and clerk J.W. Beach.
  • Supporting Images – High‑resolution JPEG and TIFF scans of both documents, with OCR text for searchable use.
  • Metadata – JSON records detailing creators, dates, subjects, and institutional provenance, plus a subject‑index field linking the case to the NHSCBAAICasesPapersSubject database.

Scope

The collection covers a specific legal transaction in New Haven County during the mid‑1830s. It includes primary source documents on land ownership, court execution, and payment of judgments. The materials are relevant to legal historians, scholars of African American history, and researchers interested in 19th‑century Connecticut property law. The collection does not contain ancillary case files, court opinions, or related correspondence beyond the execution writ and payment record.
