Description

New Haven County Superior Court Property‑Levy Execution Documents – Platt vs. Lanson (1841)

Overview

This collection comprises the original execution notice and associated documents issued by the New Haven County Superior Court on March 10–11, 1841, for the debt‑collection case Platt vs. Lanson. The materials are held by the Connecticut State Library and are digitized in both JPEG and TIFF formats, with OCR‑extracted text. The collection is part of the NHSC BAAI (Black, African American, and Indigenous) case‑papers series, reflecting the court’s historical record of property levies involving African American individuals.

Background

The case was overseen by the court’s attorney, Jonathan Stoddard, and involved an unnamed debtor whose personal property was seized to satisfy a judgment. The execution notice was posted on the public sign post in New Haven on March 11, 1841, and the sale was scheduled for 21 days later. The documents illustrate the court’s enforcement procedures in the early 19th century and provide insight into the types of property deemed valuable for debt repayment.

Contents

  • Execution Notice (March 10, 1841): Textual record of the court’s demand and the list of seized items, including straw beds, feather beds, bedsteads, bedboards, tables, washstands, a writing desk, pillows, cotton sheets, and various wagons and horse‑cart components.
  • Auction Notice (March 11, 1841): Public posting indicating the sale date and terms.
  • Images: Two JPEG scans (RG003NHSCBAAIPSExecutionsPlattvsLanson002 & 003) and two TIFF scans of the same pages, providing high‑resolution visual records of the original documents.
  • OCR Text: Machine‑readable transcription of the notice, useful for keyword searches and data extraction.

Scope

The collection covers a single court‑issued execution in New Haven, Connecticut, dated March 10–11, 1841. It includes all extant documents related to the property levy, the list of seized items, and the auction notice. The materials are public domain and are available for research in legal history, debt‑collection practices, and the socioeconomic conditions of 19th‑century New Haven, particularly as they pertain to African American communities.
