Description

Hampton vs. Martin & Clark Execution Case Collection

Overview

This collection comprises court documents from the New Haven County Superior Court concerning the 1789–1790 execution case involving defendants Hampton, Martin, and Clark. It includes two primary judgments (Judgment 008 dated August 1 1790 and Judgment 009 dated November 4 1789) and related procedural materials. The items are held by the Connecticut State Library and are presented in English. The collection is cataloged under the subjects “Executions,” “Legal proceedings,” “Judgments,” and “Black, African American, and Indigenous history.”

Background

The case reflects early 18th‑century legal practice in Connecticut, where the Superior Court adjudicated capital cases. The defendants were Black or Indigenous individuals, a fact underscored by the collection’s inclusion in the library’s Black, African American, and Indigenous History (BAAI) project. The court proceedings took place in New Haven and Cromwell, Connecticut, and were overseen by clerks Wm. Whitney Jr. and Wm. Sos. Whitney. The documents were originally produced in 1789–1790 and preserved as part of the New Haven County Superior Court’s archival record.

Contents

  • Judgment 008 (image file RG003NHSCBAAIPSExecutionsHamptonvsMartinClarkJudgment_008.jpg) – issued August 1 1790, includes an attestant statement by Jos. Whittington.
  • Judgment 009 (image file RG003NHSCBAAIPSExecutionsHamptonvsMartinClarkJudgment_009.jpg) – issued November 4 1789, lists the defendants (Hampton, Martin, Clark) and clerks (Wm. Whitney Jr., Wm. Sos. Whitney).
  • Supporting procedural text extracted from the OCR of the images, detailing court dates, locations, and procedural remarks.
The collection is a digital facsimile of the original paper judgments, preserved as JPEG images with accompanying metadata.

Scope

The collection covers the legal proceedings of the Hampton vs. Martin & Clark execution case from November 1789 to August 1790. It is geographically limited to New Haven and Cromwell, Connecticut, and thematically focused on capital punishment, court procedure, and the legal status of Black and Indigenous defendants in colonial Connecticut. The collection does not include ancillary case files, appeals, or post‑execution records beyond the two judgments.
