"The Dissecting Ticket shall be issued in her name; and she shall receive the entire proceeds thereof, subject, however, to a proportional assessment to meet the expenses of the College. "It shall be her duty to be in attendance in the Dissecting Room at stated hours; which hours shall be fixed by the Faculty; and she shall not allow the students to dissect except at the hours so statut. "She shall also recapitulate, twice a week, the lectures of the Professor of Anatomy; provided, however, that the Faculty may deem it expedient for her to do so." It was stated by the Dean that the Corporators had appointed Dr. Ellwood Harvey, Professor of Surgery, for the session 1853-4. An application was presented from Mrs. Lucinda R. Brown of Galveston, Texas, to be admitted to an examination for the degree of M.D.; she having previously attended one course of lectures at the Eclectic Medical Institute of Cincinnati, and having been engaged in the study of Medicine for the required period. It was agreed to make Mrs. Brown's a special case, and to admit her to an examination, without placing the Eclectic Medical Institute of Cincinnati, upon the ad eundem list. On motion, it was resolved that the 3rd Annual Commencement be held in the Musical Fund Hall at 11 O'Clock A.M., on the
day already fixed, namely, Thursday March 2nd 1854. On motion, it was unanimously resolved that Dr. Harvey be requested to deliver the Valedictory Oration to the graduating class. On motion, the order as to the time of ringing the bell adopted at the Faculty meeting held Oct. 17th 1853 was rescinded; and it was ordered that hereafter the Janitor shall ring the bell 5 minutes before the hour of the lecture and at the hour. The Dean was authorized to engage a band of music and to make other necessary arrangements for the Commencement. It was agreed to admit Miss Louise Starr of Utica, N.Y., as a beneficiary, taking her note for the general fee. Then adjourned:—present, Drs. Harvey, Kerr, Morrow, Preston, and Johnson. David J. Johnson M.D., Dean. No. 28. Friday Jan. 27th 1854. Reading of the minutes of the last meeting postponed. An application was received from Mrs. Jane S. Beala of Lincoln, Penobscot Co., Me., at present in attendance on the lectures in this College, to be admitted to an examination for the degree of M.D., on the ground that she had attended one course of lectures at the School established by the Boston Female Medical Education Society, and that she had for some years been engaged in the practice of Obstetrics. It was decided that she could not be admitted to an examination in accordance with the rules of this institution.
A request was then presented from Mrs. Heald that the honorary degree of M.D. be conferred upon her at the close of the present session. On motion, it was unanimously resolved that it was inexpedient to take any action in the case. On motion, the day of holding the Commencement was changed from Thursday March 2nd to Saturday Feb. 25th 1854. It having been stated that certain charges had been made in the Medical Funa Hall which might render that building unfit for holding the Commencement in, Drs. Harvey and Johnston were appointed a Committee to select a Hall for the occasion. Then adjourned:—present, Drs. Russell, Harvey, Kerr, Moray, Preston and Johnson. David J. Johnson M.D., Dean. No. 29. Monday Feb. 13th 1854. Reading of the minutes of the last two meetings postponed. The Dean stated that the following members of the Class had presented themselves as Candidates for the degree of M.D., and had been examined as prescribed by the regulations of the Faculty:—namely, Mrs. Lucinda R. Brown of Galveston, Texas; Miss Minna Elliger of Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pa.; Miss Elizabeth G. Shattuck of Philadelphia; and Miss Elizabeth H. Bates of Morris, Otsego Co., N.Y. The qualifications of the several candidates, as tested by the examination were then discussed. After which, the Faculty proceeded to a ballot; and with the following results:—
Miss Minna Elliger received 7 White balls. Miss Elizabeth H. Bates received 6 White and 1 Black ball. Miss Elizabeth G. Shattuck received 6 White and 1 Black ball. Mrs. Lucinda R. Brown received 5 White and 2 Black balls. Therefore, all, according to the Regulations of the Faculty, were considered as having passed, and as being entitled to their degrees. Then adjourned: - present, Drs. Russell, Harvey, Kerr, Mowry, Preston and Johnson. David J. Johnson M.D., Dean. No. 30. Tuesday Feb. 21st 1854. Minutes of the last three meetings read and adopted. The Committee on the Hall for the Commencement, reported that they had engaged the Musical Nona Hall for the occasion. It was also stated that Breiteis Band of Music had been engaged for $36. The Dean stated that he had reported the names of the four successful candidates to the Corporators, and that they had empowered the President of the College to confer the degree of M.D. on the said candidates at the Third Annual Commencement. The Dean also read the following Notice from the Secretary of the College: - "Philad. Feb. 20th 1854. Dr. David J. Johnson Dean &c. Dear Sir - At a meeting of the Corporators of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, held on the 17th inst., Dr. K.G. Thomas of Salem, Ohio, was
unanimously elected Professor of Surgery in this College. Yours truly, Wm. S. Peirce, Secretary." Dr. Russell and Johnson were appointed a Committee to consider the applications of candidates to be admitted as Beneficiaries at the ensuing session, with power to act. On motion of Dr. Russell, it was resolved that one general Introductory Lecture to the Fifth course of Lectures be delivered on Saturday Sept. 30th 1854 — that two of the Special Introductory be delivered on Monday Oct. 2nd, two on Tuesday Oct. 3rd, and three on Wednesday Oct. 4th — that the regular lectures commence on Thursday Oct. 5th and close on Friday Feb. 25th 1855 — and that the Fourth Annual Commencement be held on Saturday Feb. 26th 1855. Dr. Russell, Harvey, and Johnson were appointed a Committee to advertise the Fifth Annual Session in such papers as they might deem proper. On motion, the Dean was requested to draw up the Fifth Annual Announcement, and to present the same to the Faculty at its next meeting. Then adjourned: — present, Drs. Russell, Harvey, Morowy, Preston, and Johnson. David J. Johnson M.D., Dean. Memoranda. The 4th Annual Session of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania commenced on Saturday Oct. 1st 1853 and closed on Saturday Feb. 25th 1854. The General Introductory to the Course was delivered by Dr. Johnson in the Upper Lecture room at 4 O'Clock P.M.
