Description

Female Medical College of Pennsylvania Session Memoranda 1863‑1864

Overview

This collection contains a single memorandum detailing the 1863‑1864 annual session of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (FMCP). The material is presented as a scanned image (JPEG and TIFF) and a text representation in the PINAX format. The memorandum is written in English and records the dates, faculty, lectures, commencement, and valedictory address of the session.

Background

The FMCP, founded in 1850 in Philadelphia, was the first institution in the world regularly organized to train women in medicine. The memorandum was produced by the college’s faculty and secretary, Emeline H. Cleveland, and includes a contribution by Dr. Ann Preston. The document is part of the college’s minute book, which chronicles the deliberations and resolutions of the faculty. The collection is housed in the Drexel Legacy Collections, located at 229 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Contents

The memorandum lists:
  • The session’s opening on 14 October 1863 and closing on 16 March 1864.
  • The faculty composition, unchanged from the previous year.
  • The first lecture of the course, delivered by Dr. Sample, substituting for Dr. Hance.
  • The commencement held on 16 March 1864 in the parlor of the Woman’s Hospital, opened by Rev. Mr. Adams and degrees conferred by President T. Morris Prentice.
  • The valedictory address delivered by Dr. Preston.

The text is reproduced in the scanned image and in the accompanying OCR, providing a readable transcription of the memorandum’s content.

Scope

The collection covers a single session of the FMCP’s faculty, documenting the administrative and ceremonial aspects of the 1863‑1864 academic year. It is relevant to scholars of medical education, women’s history, and the institutional history of the FMCP. The material is limited to the memorandum itself; it does not include other minutes, correspondence, or ancillary records from the same period. The rights statement indicates that reproduction beyond fair use requires permission from the copyright holders.
