Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes – April 2, 1859 (Female Medical College of Pennsylvania)

Overview

This collection contains a single page of the faculty meeting minutes from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, dated April 2, 1859. The material is presented in three formats: a high‑resolution JPEG, a TIFF scan, and a JSON metadata file (Pinax) that records the meeting’s bibliographic information. The page is part of the larger “Minute book of the faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania” (1850‑1864), a bound record of the college’s deliberations.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, founded in 1850, was the world’s first institution regularly organized to train women for the medical profession. Faculty meetings were held regularly to discuss curriculum, committee assignments, and institutional governance. The April 2, 1859 meeting was convened at the college’s Philadelphia campus and recorded by the faculty’s official minute book, now preserved in the Drexel Legacy Collections.

Contents

The page records the attendance of key faculty members—Emeline H. Cleveland, Edwin Birdsell, Dr. Rockey, and Dr. Thorell—along with the presence of Dr. Furewell. The minutes note the presentation and approval of an essay for the college’s 10th annual anniversary, the continuation of a joint publication committee, and the appointment of a banqueting committee comprising Dr. Furewell, Dr. Rockey, and Dr. Cleveland. Dr. Temple is named to deliver the next general introductory address, while Dr. Cleveland will give the subsequent valedictory address. A significant procedural change is recorded: the voting rules were amended to require fifty‑five white votes out of seventy, with a minimum of five white votes in each “tribe,” and the adoption of an open‑ballot system. The meeting adjourned under the signature of Edwin Birdsell.

Scope

The collection is limited to the single minute page from April 2, 1859, but it is part of a broader 213‑page minute book covering faculty meetings from 1850 to 1864. The materials provide a snapshot of the college’s governance, committee work, and the evolving voting procedures that shaped its early years. The collection is valuable for researchers of women’s medical education, institutional history, and 19th‑century academic governance.
