Description

Female Medical College of Pennsylvania Graduation Proceedings, March 1860

Overview

This item is a scanned page (JPEG and TIFF) from the faculty minute book of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, dated March 7, 1860. It records the faculty’s deliberations on the graduation of Miss Eliza J. Zimmerman, the vote counts for each subject, the decision to confer an M.D. on March 10, 1860, and the election of the college’s officers for the year. The page is in English and is part of the Drexel Legacy Collections’ PINAX archive.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, founded in 1850 in Philadelphia, was the world’s first institution regularly organized to train women in medicine. The minute book is a primary source documenting faculty meetings, policy decisions, and administrative actions. This particular page falls within the broader collection of the college’s faculty minutes (1850‑1864) housed in the Dean’s Office Records.

Contents

  • Graduation vote: 64 white and 6 black votes for Miss Zimmerman; subject‑by‑subject tallies (Physiology 8/2, Obstetrics 10/0, Anatomy 8/2, Chemistry 10/10, Surgery 8/2).
  • Decision: Degree of M.D. to be conferred on Saturday, March 10, 1860 at 12 ½ o’clock.
  • Officer elections: Dean Edwin Fennell, Secretary E. H. Cleveland, Treasurer Dr. Temple, Teller Prof. Bennett.
  • Lecture appointments: Prof. Coates to deliver the next introductory lecture; Prof. E. H. Cleveland to deliver the next valedictory lecture.

Scope

The page documents a single faculty meeting and the administrative actions taken therein. It is representative of the college’s governance practices, the inclusion of both white and black faculty in voting, and the formal procedures surrounding the conferral of degrees and election of officers. The material is part of a larger minute book covering 1850‑1864 and is available for research under the stated copyright restrictions.
