Description

Faculty Regulations and Minutes Collection, 1850‑1860

Overview

This bound minute book contains 213 pages of faculty meeting records from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (later the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania). The volume, measuring 18.5 × 23.2 cm, documents deliberations, by‑law revisions, committee appointments, and correspondence from June 25 1850 through October 8 1864, with the core material covering the decade 1850‑1860. It is part of the Drexel Legacy Collections and is housed in the College’s legacy archive.

Background

Founded in 1850, the Female Medical College was the world’s first institution regularly organized to educate women in medicine. The faculty minutes provide insight into the governance of this pioneering college, reflecting the roles of key figures such as Dean Edwin Fussell, Professor Ann Preston, and Professor Emeline H. Cleveland. The records were originally compiled by the college’s faculty and later preserved by the Drexel Legacy Collections.

Contents

The collection includes:
  • Minutes of faculty meetings, including the March 15 1850 and March 23 1860 sessions, detailing motions, resolutions, and the reading of letters.
  • By‑law sections concerning officers, committees on Beneficiaries and Museums, and articles 3‑5.
  • Correspondence such as a letter from Ohio and a letter from Col. B. Peirce regarding legislative appropriations.
  • Administrative decisions on funds for correspondence and the permanent preservation of faculty correspondence.
  • Records of committee appointments and the adoption of new regulations.

Scope

The archive covers the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania campus of the college from 1850 to 1860, focusing on faculty governance, medical education policy, and the institutional development of women’s medical education. It is a primary source for scholars studying early women’s medical colleges, faculty administration, and the evolution of medical curricula in the United States.

March 15th, 1850 Present—Preston, Birdsell (Cleveland) Temple (late), & Fessell. On motion the section of By-laws relative to officers was reconsidered. On motion the word "corresponding" before "secretary" was stricken out. Prof Preston read a letter from Ohio which gave rise to some doubtful direction on the subject of Beneficiaries—after which Dr Fessell (Cleveland) and Preston were appointed committee on Beneficiaries for the current year, with discretionary powers to admit students by payment in these promiscuous notes or otherwise as may be agreed upon, which agreement shall be recognized by the Faculty. Dr Fessell (Cleveland) & Temple were appointed committee on Museums for the year— The subject of the duties of officers was then taken up—and articles 3rd, 4th & 5th were finally adopted. The sum of two dollars was directed to be paid to the secretary as a fund for correspondence. Resolved that all letters received by the officers relative to the affairs of the College be submitted to the Faculty at each meeting.
