Description

Female Medical College of Pennsylvania Faculty Meeting Minutes, 1862‑1864

Overview

This bound minute book contains 213 pages of faculty meeting records from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, covering the period 1862‑1864. The volume, measuring 18.5 × 23.2 cm, is in English and is part of the Drexel Legacy Collections. It includes detailed accounts of deliberations, resolutions, and discussions that shaped the college’s early years.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, founded in 1850, was the first institution worldwide dedicated to the medical education of women. The minutes were compiled by faculty secretary Emeline H. Cleveland and recorded by faculty members such as Edwin Fussell. They reflect the college’s governance structure, its interactions with other institutions (e.g., Girard College, Penn Medical University), and its efforts to maintain academic standards and student admissions.

Contents

Key subjects covered in the minutes include:
  • Student applications: Discussions on the admission of Miss Lillie and her friend, and the application of Prof. Woodworth for the Chair of Chemistry at Girard College.
  • Faculty appointments and compliance: Resolutions concerning Dr. Kerr’s compliance with regulations and the appointment of faculty members.
  • College operations: Planning of lecture schedules, contemplation of suspending lectures at Penn Medical University, and coordination of student attendance at external courses.
  • Administrative matters: Minutes record the location of meetings (e.g., at Dr. Fussell’s residence, the college building), the recording of resolutions, and the roles of faculty secretaries.

Representative pages (212‑213) illustrate the format: brief notes, motions, adjournments, and signatures of the secretary. The collection also contains images of these pages in both JPEG and TIFF formats, providing visual access to the original handwritten minutes.

Scope

The collection documents faculty deliberations from June 1862 to October 1864, focusing on the governance of the college, admission policies, faculty appointments, and interactions with other medical institutions in Philadelphia. It excludes personal correspondence, student records, or external institutional minutes beyond those referenced in the discussions. The material is valuable for scholars of women’s medical education, institutional history, and 19th‑century academic governance.

the Autumn of 1862, that she attended the course of lectures for 1862-03 in the New England Free Med. College which course included no lectures upon Surgery—that she entered the New York Infirmary in the Autumn of 1863 & had since attended the practice of that Institution & the Surgical Clinics of the DeWitt Dispensary. These statements coupled with the inquiry whether she could be received as a second course student of our College with the hope of presenting herself for examination. The same inquiry was made also for a friend who had enjoyed the same advantages with the addition of one year's study with a Physician. On notice of Dr. Kerr it was resolved that the spirit of our regulations had been so far complied with by Miss Lillie & her friend & their own compliance with the latter had been so far impossible to them that we might—shall admit them to our session with the hope on their part of graduating but with no hope of favor in examination.
