Description

Minute Book of the Faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1864

Overview

This bound minute book contains 213 pages of handwritten and typed faculty meeting records from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania (FMCP) in Philadelphia. The volume, measuring 18.5 × 23.2 cm, documents deliberations held throughout 1864, with a particular focus on lecture scheduling, faculty appointments, and inter‑institutional matters. The book is part of the Drexel Legacy Collections and is available in both JPEG and TIFF formats.

Background

FMCP, founded in 1850, was the first medical college in the world organized specifically for women. The minutes were compiled by Emeline H. Cleveland, the faculty secretary, and Edwin Fussell, a key administrator. The college’s faculty meetings were central to shaping curriculum, staffing, and the college’s public relations with other medical schools. The 1864 volume reflects the college’s active engagement with contemporary medical education challenges, including the suspension of lectures at the Penn Medical University.

Contents

Key entries include:
  • October 8, 1864 – Application of Prof. Woodworth of Girard College for the Chair of Chemistry; motion to adjourn.
  • October 31, 1864 – Meeting at Dr. Fussell’s residence to arrange lecture schedules; discussion of the Dean’s report on the contemplated suspension of lectures at Penn Medical University and the application of its faculty to attend FMCP lectures.
  • Additional pages record earlier meetings, resolutions, and administrative notes.
The minutes are written in English and provide a detailed record of faculty discussions, motions, and adjournments.

Scope

The collection covers faculty meetings held in 1864, documenting decisions on lecture scheduling, faculty appointments, and interactions with other medical institutions. It is a primary source for scholars studying women’s medical education, faculty governance, and 19th‑century medical curricula in Philadelphia. The material is subject to copyright restrictions; reproduction beyond fair use requires written permission from the copyright holders.
