# Injun Joe's Plan ## Overview This entity is a narrative scene extracted from the novel *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* by Mark Twain. It appears in [CHAPTER XXVI](arke:01KG2TRBJ3N8PQZE3STX3F94JX) and spans lines 6642 to 6659 of the source text file [tom_sawyer.txt](arke:01KG2T4RHC4E1XKJ12BJRXE8E8). The scene captures a pivotal moment in which the antagonist, Injun Joe, outlines his future plans to his accomplice, following a discussion about a dangerous job they intend to carry out. ## Context The scene occurs during a tense sequence in the haunted house, where Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are secretly hiding and overhearing a conversation between two criminals. It directly follows a dialogue in which Injun Joe dismisses concerns about risk, asserting his willingness to return to town for reconnaissance. This moment is part of a larger chapter in which the boys witness criminal activity firsthand, shifting the story from playful adventure to real danger. The scene is archived within the [Test Collection](arke:01KG2T49K0H5GDRB0G4YDTPG8H), a digital repository of textual materials. ## Contents The scene features Injun Joe instructing his companion to return upriver and await further instructions, while he personally scouts the town one final time. He proposes carrying out the “dangerous” job only after assessing conditions, then declares their ultimate destination: Texas, where they will “leg it together.” The passage conveys Injun Joe’s dominance and calculated ruthlessness. After this declaration, both men grow drowsy, and Injun Joe assigns the watch to his partner before falling asleep, setting the stage for the boys’ attempted escape, which is captured in the next scene, [The boys' reaction](arke:01KG2TS1PS5H7YZTXXF3C0NGY3).

text
The two men got out some food and made a luncheon. After a long and thoughtful silence, Injun Joe said: “Look here, lad—you go back up the river where you belong. Wait there till you hear from me. I’ll take the chances on dropping into this town just once more, for a look. We’ll do that ‘dangerous’ job after I’ve spied around a little and think things look well for it. Then for Texas! We’ll leg it together!” This was satisfactory. Both men presently fell to yawning, and Injun Joe said: “I’m dead for sleep! It’s your turn to watch.” He curled down in the weeds and soon began to snore. His comrade stirred him once or twice and he became quiet. Presently the watcher began to nod; his head drooped lower and lower, both men began to snore now.
