It is some three miles northward from Carmel, and half a mile east of it are some ruins, which are those probably of a citadel used by the tribe (the Ziphites) from which the hill takes its name. There are indications that once the place was heavily wooded, and the lay of the land shows that before the forest was burned or cut away it must have been a tolerably secure fastness or retreat.
