Captain Ahab was the captain of the whaling ship Pequod. He was obsessed with hunting the white whale Moby Dick, who had bitten off his leg in a previous encounter. His first mate was Starbuck, a thoughtful and cautious man who often disagreed with Ahabs reckless pursuit of the whale. The Pequod sailed from Nantucket, Massachusetts, on a multi-year whaling voyage. Along the way, they encountered other ships whose crews had their own encounters with the great white whale. Ishmael, the narrator, was a young sailor who joined the voyage seeking adventure. Queequeg was a skilled harpooner from the South Pacific island of Rokovoko.
