Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes – February 1858

Overview

This archival item is a primary source document comprising the minutes of faculty meetings held on 9 February 1858 and 20 February 1858. It is stored as a text file (ID 01K9ZNTAGHEAN01WSEJ1F4J6NR) and accompanied by scanned images of the original page (JPEG and TIFF). The minutes record attendance, the presentation of inaugural theses by four women, and the subsequent faculty election of the same candidates. The document is in English, created in February 1858, and was authored by G. Finselle, Dean of the institution.

Background

The minutes originate from the drexel‑production repository and were catalogued by the digital platform PINAX. The meetings were part of the academic governance of a mid‑19th‑century college (the exact institutional name is not specified in the metadata). The dean, G. Finselle, signed the minutes, indicating official approval. The record reflects the early practice of inviting female scholars to submit inaugural theses and the faculty’s role in evaluating and electing them to teaching positions.

Contents

  • Attendance: Faculty members present at the 9 Feb session were Preston, Cleveland, Bradell, and Finselle. The 20 Feb session included Preston, Cleveland, Bradell, Temple, adjunct Prof. Harvey, and proxy Brown.
  • Theses Presented:
  • - Miss Susan Parry – “Hygiene” (referred to Preston) - C. Henrietta Bunkel – “Insanity” (referred to Bradell) - Mrs. Hannah W. Jones – “Sleep” (referred to Finselle) - Mrs. Rebecca Finselle – “Manchester” (referred to Cleveland)
  • Election Results (20 Feb):
  • - Rebecca Finselle – 69 white votes, 1 black vote - Hannah Jones – 66 white, 4 black - Henrietta Bunkel – 60 white, 10 black - Susan Parry – 54 white, 16 black All four were declared duly elected.
  • Signatory: The minutes were signed by Dean G. Finselle.

Scope

The record covers two specific dates in February 1858, documenting the examination of inaugural theses and the faculty election process. It focuses on the individuals listed above, the subjects of their theses, and the voting outcomes. The document does not provide broader institutional context, geographic details, or subsequent career trajectories of the elected faculty. It is a concise, contemporaneous account of a faculty governance event in the mid‑19th century.
