Special Meeting of the Faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, March 8 1864

Overview

This archival item is a primary source record of a special faculty meeting held on March 8 1864 at the house of Dr. Bushue (815 Marshall St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). It is presented as a digitized photograph of the meeting minutes (JPEG and TIFF formats) and is catalogued under the identifier 01K9ZNVV4CNK6ZXVE8PZWDP73X. The material is in English, created by the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, and is part of the Drexel‑Production collection sourced from PINAX.

Background

The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania was one of the first institutions to train women in medicine during the mid‑19th century. In 1864, amid the Civil War, the college’s faculty convened to discuss a communication from Dr. Frank, a long‑serving faculty member who announced his resignation. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Goulds and attended by Temple, Ewen, Winifred Scarlett, and Cleveland, reflecting the small, close‑knit faculty community of the time.

Contents

The photograph reproduces the handwritten minutes of the meeting. Key elements include:
  • Date and location: March 8 1864, Dr. Bushue’s house, 815 Marshall St.
  • Chair and attendees: Prof. Goulds (chair), Temple, Ewen, Winifred Scarlett, Cleveland.
  • Agenda: Reading of Dr. Frank’s February 27 1864 communication, in which he expresses regret at leaving after seven years of service.
  • Discussion: The minutes note the faculty’s response to Dr. Frank’s departure and the broader implications for the college’s future.

The image files (JPEG and TIFF) provide high‑resolution views of the original minutes, allowing scholars to examine the handwriting and layout.

Scope

The item covers a single, specific event in the history of women’s medical education. It is confined to the date of March 8 1864, the Philadelphia setting, and the faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. The material does not include broader institutional records, but it offers insight into faculty governance, personnel changes, and the personal sentiments of a departing faculty member during a pivotal era for the college.

March 81, 1864. A special meeting of the Family was held at the house of Dr. Bushue 815 Marshall St. present: Prof. Goulds, Temple, Ewen, Winifred Scarlett & Cleveland. Dr. Goulds was called to the Chair. The following communication was received & read from Dr. Frank: Phila. Feb. 27, 1864. To the Faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania. "Both I write the word farewell; after seven years of work in behalf of the College & its Cause—laboring to the best of my ability in any poor way to promote the interests of both & under varying hopes, discouragement & disappointment; now in the hour of its success, when the reward of patient endurance seemed about to fall like ripe fruit into our hands, I must say farewell! It is one of the saddest volitions of my life! But I cannot do otherwise. Dithers I regret that after full discussion there should be such irreconcilable difference of view."
