Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes – April 20 and May 24, 1864

Overview

This item is a primary‑source document comprising the minutes of two faculty meetings of the New England Free Medical College held in 1864. The minutes were recorded in English, created on April 20 and May 24, 1864, and are preserved as scanned images (JPEG and TIFF) with OCR text. The file is part of the “May 1864 Faculty Meetings” directory and was produced by the Pinax system for Drexel Production. No copyright restrictions are listed.

Background

The New England Free Medical College, located in New York, was an early institution that admitted women to medical study. The faculty meetings recorded in this document reflect the administrative and academic governance of the college during the Civil War era. The meetings were held at Marshall Street, New York (April 20) and at the college’s premises (May 24). Key faculty members present included Prof. Furnell, Preston, Scarlett, E. U. Cleveland (secretary), Dr. Coates, and Dr. Kerr.

Contents

  • April 20, 1864 meeting: Adoption of Articles 7‑9 of the bylaws, presentation of a draft announcement for the corporators, appointment of Prof. Furnell to deliver the General Introductory lecture and Dr. Coates to deliver the valedictory address. The minutes record the meeting’s time (3:15 p.m.) and location.
  • May 24, 1864 meeting: Reading and approval of the previous minutes; receipt of a letter from Miss Lillie of New York. The letter details her prior study of medicine in 1862‑03 (no surgery lectures), her attendance at the New York Infirmary and the Dewitt Dispensary in 1863, and a request to be admitted as a second‑course student. The same inquiry was made for a friend who had similar experience plus one year of study with a physician. Dr. Kerr notes that both applicants have complied with the college’s regulations and that admission may be granted with the hope of graduation, though no favor is expected in examination.
  • Supporting material: The scanned pages include the full text of the minutes and the letter, with OCR excerpts provided in the source files.

Scope

The document covers two specific faculty meetings in 1864, detailing administrative decisions (bylaws, announcements, lecture appointments) and admission deliberations for two prospective female students. It is limited to the minutes of these meetings and the accompanying letter; it does not include other faculty or board meetings, nor the full content of the bylaws beyond Articles 7‑9. The material is relevant to scholars of medical education history, gender studies, and 19th‑century New York institutions.

the Autumn of 1862, that she attended the course of lectures for 1862-03 in the New England Free Med. College which course included no lectures upon Surgery—that she entered the New York Infirmary in the Autumn of 1863 & had since attended the practice of that Institution & the Surgical Clinics of the Dewitt Dispensary. These statements coupled with the inquiry whether she could be received as a second course student of our College with the hope of presenting herself for examination. The same inquiry was made also for a friend who had enjoyed the same advantages with the addition of one year's study with a Physician. On notice of Dr. Kerr it was resolved that the spirit of our regulations had been so far complied with by Miss Lillie & her friend & their own compliance with the latter had been so far impossible to them that we might—shall admit them to our session with the hope on their part of graduating but with no hope of favor in examination.
