Description

Student Applications and Admissions Records (1862‑1864)

Overview

A textual and photographic record of admissions procedures, faculty deliberations, and inter‑institutional correspondence concerning medical education in the early 1860s. The collection comprises scanned images of handwritten notes and minutes (JPEG and TIFF formats) and accompanying metadata in JSON. It was produced by the New England Free Medical College, New York Infirmary, and Dewitt Dispensary and is housed in the “drexel‑production‑final” repository.

Background

The documents were created during the Civil War era, a period of rapid expansion and reform in American medical training. The New England Free Medical College (NEFMC) was a pioneering institution offering free medical instruction, while the New York Infirmary and Dewitt Dispensary provided clinical training. The collection also references Girard College and Penn Medical University, indicating broader regional collaboration.

Contents

  • Admissions Records: A review of Miss Lillie’s application (September 1862) and that of a friend, culminating in an admission resolution that allowed them to join the 1862‑03 lecture course without examination privileges.
  • Faculty Meeting Minutes: Two meetings held on 8 Oct 1864 and 31 Oct 1864, recorded by E.B. Cleveland. Topics included the appointment of a Chair of Chemistry at Girard College, scheduling of lectures, and a proposal to suspend Penn Medical University lectures.
  • Correspondence: Reports from the Dean on the Penn application, allowing Penn students to attend NEFMC lectures.
  • Images: JPEG scans (a092001212.jpg, a092001213.jpg) and high‑resolution TIFFs (a092001212.tif, a092001213.tif) contain handwritten notes, names of faculty (Dr. Kerr, Dr. Fassell, Prof. Woodworth, Preston Temple Scarlett), and dates. OCR text confirms the content of the meetings and admissions decisions.

Scope

The collection covers the years 1862‑1864, focuses on New England and New York institutions, and documents student admissions, faculty governance, and inter‑institutional arrangements. It does not include clinical case records or broader medical curricula beyond the referenced lectures and meetings.

the Autumn of 1862, that she attended the course of lectures for 1862-03 in the New England Free Med. College which course included no lectures upon Surgery—that she entered the New York Infirmary in the Autumn of 1863 & had since attended the practice of that Institution & the Surgical Clinics of the Dewitt Dispensary. These statements coupled with the inquiry whether she could be received as a second course student of our College with the hope of presenting herself for examination. The same inquiry was made also for a friend who had enjoyed the same advantages with the addition of one year's study with a Physician. On notice of Dr. Kerr it was resolved that the spirit of our regulations had been so far complied with by Miss Lillie & her friend & their own compliance with the latter had been so far impossible to them that we might—shall admit them to our session with the hope on their part of graduating but with no hope of favor in examination.
