Description

Faculty Meeting Minutes on Rules and Regulations (Penn College, Ohio)

Overview

This archival item consists of scanned images (JPEG and TIFF) of faculty meeting minutes from Penn College in Ohio, compiled in 1860. The minutes are presented in English and include handwritten notes, typed entries, and official signatures. The collection covers four distinct meetings held on 4 January 1860, 19 January 1860, 15 March 1850, and 23 March 1860, and is catalogued in the PINAX repository (ID 01KA1HG7VV0NDWA2XXDW7JVTY4).

Background

Penn College, a higher‑education institution in Ohio, convened faculty meetings to discuss and amend its rules, by‑laws, and administrative procedures. The minutes were drafted by the college deans—Edwin Furness and Edwin Fussell—and recorded by faculty members such as Dr. Birdsell, Prof. Preston, and others. The documents reflect early governance practices of a 19th‑century American college and illustrate the college’s efforts to formalize its internal regulations and financial oversight.

Contents

  • Meeting Dates & Attendees: Each page lists the date, location, and participants (e.g., Preston, Birdsell, Cleveland, Coates, Fussell).
  • Committee Appointments: Committees on Essay, Beneficiaries, Museums, and Correspondence were established, with named members and stated purposes.
  • Financial Reports: The Faculty Fund balance ($21.46) and a $2.00 allocation for correspondence were reported.
  • By‑law Amendments: Revisions to officer sections, removal of the word “corresponding” before “secretary,” and resolutions concerning letter handling.
  • Correspondence: Letters from Ohio and from Col. B. Peirce (regarding legislative appropriation) are referenced and, in one case, filed.
  • Preservation Directive: A resolution to permanently preserve all faculty correspondence in the college building.

Scope

The collection documents governance and administrative matters of Penn College from March 1850 to March 1860, focusing on rules, by‑laws, committee structures, financial oversight, and correspondence management. It excludes broader institutional histories, faculty biographies, or external legislative records beyond the referenced letters. The item is valuable for researchers studying early American college administration, faculty governance, and the evolution of institutional regulations.
