Overview

This digital collection comprises the scanned pages (165‑167) of the 30th Annual Meeting of the Faculty of the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, held on January 4, 1864 in Philadelphia. The material is presented in English and includes the original minute book pages, a metadata record (Pinax JSON), and high‑resolution TIFF and JPEG images. The collection is part of the Drexel Legacy Collections and is governed by the standard copyright and privacy restrictions applicable to the archive.

Background

The Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, founded in 1850, was the first institution worldwide dedicated to the medical education of women. The faculty’s annual meetings were key forums for governance, financial oversight, and curricular decisions. The 1864 meeting, recorded by Dean Erwin Freuler and attended by professors Ann Preston, William Cleveland, and others, reflects the college’s administrative practices during the early years of its operation.

Contents

  • Minute book pages 165‑167: The pages contain the opening of the meeting, the reading and approval of the previous minutes, and the Dean’s expenditure report totaling $10.75.
  • Treasurer’s report (January 8): Shows cash received of $147.76, beneficiary payments, and a total of $157.76.
  • Secretary’s expenditure table: Lists 244 items, including stationery, postage, and various supplies.
  • Donation proposal: A $5,000 anonymous donation earmarked for a permanent fund.
  • Allocation decision: $500 allocated to departments, including the Chair of Chemistry.
  • Committee appointments: Audit committee formed with Professors Temple and Scarlett; Museum and Beneficence committees continued.
  • Metadata record: Pinax JSON detailing creators, subjects, and event relationships.

Scope

The collection covers the administrative proceedings of the 1864 faculty meeting, including financial reporting, committee formation, and donation management. It is geographically bound to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and temporally limited to the early 1860s. The material is a subset of the larger minute book (a092_001) and provides a focused view of the college’s governance during its 30th year of operation.
