Chartbook Newsletter Collection

Overview

The Chartbook Newsletter Collection is a digital archive of 27 newsletters authored by economist Adam Tooze. Created on 15 November 2020, the collection is hosted by the test‑tooze institution and stored in the PINAX repository. The newsletters are available in English and are protected by an “All rights reserved” copyright notice. Each issue is a self‑contained HTML file that combines narrative analysis with data visualisations and external references.

Background

Adam Tooze, a historian and economist, launched the Chartbook series to provide timely, data‑driven commentary on global economic and geopolitical developments. The series draws on reports from institutions such as the Federal Reserve, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Commission, as well as academic papers and policy briefs. The collection was formally established in November 2020 and covers the period from 15 November 2020 to 31 July 2021.

Contents

The newsletters cover a wide array of subjects:
  • Financial Markets – Treasury dynamics, Bitcoin price movements, and market liquidity.
  • Economic Policy – Euro‑area inflation, U.S. fiscal proposals, and net‑zero initiatives.
  • Geopolitics – Brexit, China’s state‑capitalism, Russia, Sudan, the Sahel, and the Caribbean.
  • Historical Analysis – World War II economics, Weimar hyperinflation, and the Battle of Stalingrad.
  • Regional Focus – China, Italy, Nigeria, Afghanistan, and the Eurasian context.

Each issue includes hyperlinks to primary reports, charts, and citations to figures such as Lorie Logan, Steve Mnuchin, and Xi Jinping.

Scope

The archive covers the years 2020–2021 and focuses on global economics, financial markets, and geopolitics. It includes data‑rich visualisations and commentary on events from the United States, China, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The collection does not contain primary source documents such as official policy texts but provides curated analysis and links to external reports. It is intended for researchers, students, and policy analysts seeking a concise, chart‑driven overview of recent economic developments.
